Yesterday I met with a group of entrepreneur friends and I explained the upcoming .xxx Sunrise B to them. Sunrise B allows non-adult trademark holders to pay a one time fee to block their trademark from ever being registered in .xxx.

After explaining the process an inevitable question came up: “So, Andrew, do you think we should participate in Sunrise B”.

1st .XXX Site Goes Live

The first porn site to go live with a .XXX domain name is www.casting.xxx

It’s the first site to launch under ICM Registry’s Founder Program, which will
allocate 1,500 domains to 35 “founders.” It went live this evening.

Casting.xxx, billed as a site presenting amateur content, is registered to Really
Useful Ltd. The site’s registrant operator is Lewis Richard Thomas of Grand Turk in
the Turks and Caicos Islands, according to a Whois search.
.XXX’s sunrise period starts in September, with landrush in November. General availability is slated for December.

The launch process will be done in specified date ranges based on the qualifications of both members and non-members of the adult Sponsored Community.

SUNRISE A

Sunrise A is dedicated to members of the adult Sponsored Community with either verifiable trademark rights or owners of exact matching domains in other IANA TLDs which is also known as “Grandfathering.”

SUNRISE B

Sunrise B was created especially for non-adult Intellectual Property holders who are non-members of the adult Sponsored Community with verifiable trademark rights so they can block their domains in the .XXX sTLD.

LANDRUSH

Landrush is for members of the adult Sponsored Community but NOT on a first come, first served basis. Unlike Sunrise A and Sunrise B, there are no qualification requirements needed for Landrush. Applications for competing names will go to a closed-auction at the end of the Landrush period.

GENERAL AVAILABILITY

General Availability is when members of the adult Sponsored Community get regular, resolving names on a first come, first served basis. Non-members of the adult Sponsored Community can also get “Non-Resolving” names.

ICM Registry has announced September 7 as the opening date for initial domain name registrations and reservations in the .xxx-sponsored, generic top level domain (sTLD). Trademark Owners Can Block Misuse in .xxx Domain

Trademark owners can prevent their names from being misused in the new .xxx top-level domain by blocking these names, ICM Registry, the Florida-based registry operator for the .xxx top-level domain said.

As the .xxx domain is a domain reserved for adult entertainment, some trademark owners may not wish to be associated with it. The domain was created earlier this year by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which determines which top-level domains can exist and who will manage them.

The .xxx domain is one of the sponsored top-level domains set up to represent a specific community, and which have a sponsor in charge of policy formulation over matters concerning the domain. ICANN delegated the management of .xxx to sponsor ICM under a registry agreement.

Companies rush to avoid .xxx embarrassment

It was at the centre of a decade-long controversy about morality online, but it now seems the new .xxx suffix for pornography websites is proving a commercial success, with the potential corporate embarrassment helping to drive demand.

According to ICM registry, the firm selling the new addresses, it has received 900,000 expressions of interest.

As a result the firm has extended the “sunrise period” to allow brands to buy .xxx addresses containing their trademarks before they go on general sale.

As well as pornographers, ICM Registry says companies that do not want to be associated with what has been dubbed the “internet’s red light district” should also buy up addresses. They will be charged $200 to $300 during the sunrise period to avoid so-called “cybersquatters” hijacking their brand. (read more)
